The head mistress (Miss Willis) reported yesterday that the- attendance at the Phillipstown Kindergarten had been very poor during the mouth owing to a great deal of sickness in the district. Two of the teachers had also been absent for a week through sickness, and the school was closed on August 24 for tho spring holidavs. The number on the roll was 72,“ highest attendance 32, lowest 6, The treasurer’s report stated that school contributions amounted to £1 17s 6d and subscriptions (per Mrs Williams) to £5. Mrs Elizabeth Johnson, whose death took place at her late residence, Beacli Road, Ashburton, was a very old resident of Ashburton. She was a native of Sussex and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Hereford in 1874, settling in Ashburton a fortnight later. Mrs Johnson was of an unassuming disposition and was ever ready to render assistance in times of sickness and distress. The funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, was largely attended. The late Mrs Johnson is survived by her husband, four sons, four daughters and twenty-one grandchildren.
