A JOY RIDE.

YOUTHS’ ESCAPADE. An arrest was made bv the Ashburton police yesterday afternoon, when two brothers, aged eighteen and nineteen years respectively, were apprehended on 3i charge of stealing a. two-seater motorcar at Invercargill, the car being valued at £350. At 10.30 Senior-Sergeant Rvau was informed from Timnni that a. motorcar answering to the description of one stolen from Invercargill on the night of August 31, had been seen, passing through Tiraaru early that morning* and at once Constable Bel] was stationed on the Ashburton traffic bridge. At 12.40 p.m his attention was drawn to a ca-r travelling at an excessive speed and containing two youths. ; The constable attempted to stop the car, but the youths ignored his warning and, proceeding at a. rate of fully forty miles an hour, passed through the main street of Ashburton- A taxi-cab was summoned and gavechaso. After travelling about three miles of the Main Road, the petrol of the motor-car gaVe out and the car was left standing on the side of the road while the youths went in quest of a fresh supply. Tn the meantime the police made their appearance, and on sighting trouble the two youths made off towards Dromore. Constable Dunn, who went to the scene on his motor-cycle, headed them off. and eventually arrested them fnllv three miles from where the car was left standing. They were brought back into Ashburton aud lodged in the lock-up.
