The Major (Dr Thacker) stated this morning that' the Mar Memorial Exeentivo will meet in the City Council Chambers on Wednesday evening, ifisiead of Thursday, as had been arranged, when the reports of sub-committees will be presented ,ml arrangements made to meet Mr G. Gould’s War Column Committee. The Mayor was of opinion that whatever conclusion was come to the matter would require to oe settled by a referendum on the lines of the municipal franchise.
Tho Wellington police have had then hands full recently as a. result of a( seguence of tragedies or strange disappearances. No trace has been found of Mr J, j. I ’. Hursthousc, who disappeared from York Bay some weeks ago, and the most active inquiries have failed to throw any further light on the finding of tho body of Mrs Hebbend in the harbour last I) riday. Another strange disappearance has now been reported—that of a biackborrying party. Mr "William Jackson, of Constable Street, sot out on Saturday with Ids motorcycle with his nine-year-old son and, a little girl named Byrne, aged ton years, as passengers in the side-car, to go blaokberrymg, presumably in or about the Upper Butt district, and since his departure no word has been board of bun, the children or the mo-tor-cycle.
