RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION DISCUSSED. [Fir Prkss Association*.] WELLINGTON, March 4. • Full consideration was given by the Chambers of Commerce conference yesterday and to-day to the Canterbury Chamber’s scheme lor reform in tin management of the construction of New Zealand railways. The following amendment was carried That in older to eliminate political influence and promote efficiency and economy the railways in course'of construction and in prospect should bo taken over by the Hallway Department. an'd that the Canterbury remits be referred to the executive for further consideration and, if necessary, action. Further, this conference affirms tho principle of non-political control.” The conference also decided that tho "Railway Department should be asked to Assume responsibility for the delivery of goods consigned to and from stintlons where there is a tablet porter in charge. .11, was resolved that the presfent. charges made by the Railway Department at various ports for sorting goods was-inequitable'and the executive was asked to support the representations already made. • The conference resolved that a vigorous campaign of publicity for advertising New Zealand products at Homy was necessary. Mr J. T, Martin described tho out-of-date methods in London, and said that greater efforts vero.required at this end directing tho propaganda, and an expert was wanted to place the matter at the other end.
