GOVERNMENT AND CITY COUNCIL. The Prime Minister on January 10 wrote to the City Council, in reply to the council's appeal for financial help in its housing scheme, stating that the request would come before Cabinet at an early date, and adding; “The Government is anxious to render every possible assistance to local bodies' and .others carrying out schemes for the housing of the people of the Dominion, ' hut it will be readily understood that 1 loans granted by tho Government are limited by tho Act of last year, and | the amount that may ho lent to the | Christchurch City Council will depend on the number of applications received from other similar bodies.” Tho letter was read at last night's meeting of the City Council. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor J. A. Fleshcr, seconded by Councillor C. p. Agar, that the council should inform tho Prime Minister that it trusted thfct the Government would at the earliest opportunity make provision to assist local bodies in carrying out housing schemes in a liberal manner to meet the requirements. Mr Massey announces that contracts have been placed with Fletcher Bros and the Wellington and Wanganui Sash and Door Company fgr the provision ot the joinery for two hundred dwelllusts.
