A GOVERNMENT LOAN.
POSITION OF WESTPORT HARBOUR HOARD. [Per Press Association-.] WESTPORT, November 17. Something like a sardonic smile passed over the countenances of members of the Westport Harbour Board to-day when it received a telegram from the Treasury staling that the Government was granting i, a “loan’’ of £,'«),()«) to relieve it of its financial difficulties and asking tl" board to arrange securities. Tlv financial difficulties are brought hi it by the Government under the Finance Act. 1905, whereby it has confiscated something in the vicinity of £60,000 of the board's revenue. It has'compelled the hoard to meet all the war charges and increased costs in running the harbour railways out of its ordinary revenue and taken the £60,000 at the expense of the upkeep of the harbour, and has compelled the board to curtail all its works. Attempts to get the Government to repeal the inequitable clauses of the Art failed, and the Westport Harbour Board is faced with the most, serious financial crisis in the whole of its history-
