LIFE-SAVING.
ANNUAL MEETING OF CENTRE.
The ninth annual meeting of the Canterbury Head Centre of the Koval Life-saving Society was held last night. Mr S. K. Bassett was in the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the Hon H. F. Vagram, president.
The resignation of the secretaryship by Mr G. E. Biilsoi:, on account of a change ot residence, was received. The chairman welcomed as delegates Messrs L. Brewer (Greymouth), A. M. Clivers and C. T Mosley (New Brighton) and O. Ballin (Taylor’s Mistake). In moving thb adoption oi the annual report and balance-sheet, a resume of which has already been published, the chairman said that ho hoped an effort would be made to get the pound for pomid subsidy which was promised by tho Government. The motion was seconded by Mr G. F. Allen, who spoke in highly appreciative terms o? the work of the society. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the following officers for the year were elected:—Patton, the King; vice-patron, the Governor-General; vice-presidents, the Mayor (Dr Thacker) and Messrs H. Holland, J. J. Dougall. G. C. Allison, A. E. G. Rhode,?, A. Boyle, H. L. Bowker. J. D. Hall. C. Ferricr. Bishops Julius and Brodie, Captain Marciel and Lieutenant-Colonel Cossgvovo, honorary secretary, Mr J. Wyn Irwin; assistant secretary, Mr H. Breward; honorary treasurer, Mr G. F. Allen; Head Centre Committee, Misses Cowley, D. Brandon and E. Thomas. Messrs P. Bamford, C. T. Mosley, G. B. Pearce, J. tVyn Irwin, R. Malcolm, S. K. Bassett, G. E. Billeon, S. Haynes, J. M. Heath, F. L. Andrews, C. Brvant, G. F. Allen, Mitchell. A. M. drivers and O. Ballin; chief honorary instructor, Mr J. IVyn Irwin; delegate tc Canterbury Centre N.Z.A.S.A., Mr A. Barrett ; delegate to Dominion executive R.L.S.S., Mr G. E. Billaon. A letter was received from the local branch of the Navy League asking that the society should contribute a wreath for Nelson Day (to-day). It was decided to send the wreath, the cost of which was subscribed in tho room.
Mr J, 'Wyn- Irwin said that he intended to make efforts in the direction of getting teachers interested in !i?e-tavir.g work, and he thought that the ’ society should as a whole make a move in the matter. At prosent local school life-saving competitions were not taken up as they should be, and the training of teachers in life-saving methods was necessary. It was decided to request the Canterbury Education Board to pay the swimming expenses of teachers endeavouring to qualify themselves as life-saving instructors. Mr L. Brewer moved—'“ That this meeting nrges upon the Greymouth School Committee the desirability of constructing a swimming bath in order that scholars he given the opportunity of becoming proficient in the art of swimming and methods of lifesaving. nowadays such necessary qualifications in a child’s education.” The motion was carried, after it had been seconded by Mr A. Barrett. It was decided to hold a street collection on behalf of the society, if possible in conjunction with carnivals at the Tepid Baths and the seaside, and a suh-committee to make arrangements was elected.
