A very enjoyable social evening was spent at the St Albans Guild Hall last evening on the occasion of a welcome home social to Privates Bert and Gvril Shaw sons of Mr and Mrs W. Shaw. Woodville Street, St Albans. There were many relatives and friends present. Dancing was kept up to a late hour.
A soldier who lost his arm a§ the result of being bitten on the Land by a lion at a travelling menagerie at Birkenhead (England) on New Year’s Eve, lost an action for damages against the showman, Mr P. Collins Plaintiff’s case was-that ho slipped near the lions cage anJ fell against the rope harrier. It was alleged that this was not an adequate protection, and his hand went into tho cage. A lion seized and mauled it. Bloodpoisoning supervened, and his arm was amputated. He denied having teased the animals or tried to pat them. the defence' a lady said plaintiff got under the rope barrier, which was of the usual type, and put his fhand against the cage. The next tiling she saw was the lion biting his hand. Another lady said she heard plaintiff say he had seen Hons before, and he was not frightened of them. Judgment was given fo~ the deefndant, the fudge expressing the opinion that plaintiff lost his arm through foolhardiness. i
