RHODES SCHOLAR.
APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED. CANTERBURY MAH SELECTED. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. October 6. The_ selection committee appointed Mr N. M. Richmond, of Canterbury College, this year’s Rhodes scholar. MR RICHMOND'S CAREER. Mr Norman Macdonald Richmond was born on October 23, 1897. He is a son of the late Mr M. W. Richmond, Professor of English and New Zealand Law at Victoria College, Wellington, until 1911, and latterly, until his death early this year, a barrister in Christchurch. Mr N. AI. Richmond was edn- i rated at the Terrace School, Wellington. and subsequently at Wellington and Nelson C olleges. He won a junior Education Board scholarship in 1908 ! and a junior university .scholarship in j 1914, being fourth on the list of successful candidates. He won the Canterbury College prizes in mathematics in 1915, 1910 and 1917, winning a. senior university scholarship in applied mathematics in 1917. Mr Richmond is the bolder of many prizes for sports, especially gymnastics, swimming and drill. He is captain of the Canterbury College football fifteen, secretary of the College Dialectic Society. vice-president of the Students’ Association and editor of the Canterburr College' “Review.” Air Richmond served with the Ist Battery, N.Z.F.A. in the war. enlisting in October, 1917, and returning in June of this year. He was heavyweight boxing champion of {be ThirtyBeventh Reinforcements in Trentbam, and played for the Ist Baiterv, N.Z. F.A. football team in France and Germany. Afr Richmond is the third Rhodes scholar to be selected from Cnntcrburv. tho other two being Air A. L. Richards and Afr H. S. Richards.
