DARNING EFFORTS.
There is a very effective kind of work called “ Outlining and Darning.” Of course the most elaborate patterns can be worked out from this; but the idea is of leaving the pattern plain, and covering The background with close stitches. But the design can bo simplified quite well. For instance, a nursery cushion or child’s playing overall or jumper can be worked in this way. A simple pattern such as a mushroom, n rabbit, or a flower having been drawn lightly in pencil, within a circle, the circle only should be filled in with darning stitches. Tho result of this treatment is surprisingly effectiveAnother way of getting a good darning effect is to fill in the pattern with a darning stitch in two colours. For a corner pattern, as for instance, for a collar, rdf aw a diamond and All in with the silks by darning two alternative rows of the two colours or shades chosen. The collar can be finished by a double row' of darning round the edge.
