MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

TO-DAY’S CASES. CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) THEFT FROM HOTEL. Joseph Delaney, a young man, appeared on a charge of stealing a cushion owned by Susan M’Millan, and a gabardine cloak, a rug, and a cushion, the property of Annie Hardio- It was alleged that the articles were stolen from the Wellington Hotel. After evidence had been heard, accused was convicted, and sentence was withheld till to-morrow morning. The Magistrate said he would give accused a chance of telling what he knew about the whereabouts’ of the articles.

BY-LAW CASESFor riding without lights,. William Gerald Gerard, William Gibson and William Flood were each fined 20s and costs. For exceeding the speed limit, Alexander Leo Johns, Allan K. Brake, Robert Davidson, Gordon Fulton, Thomas Matson, Robert John Parsons, Wilfred Ready, Norman Speeding and Arthur Ranald Turnbull were each lined 40s and costs. Duncan M 3 Far lane was fined 40s and costs on each of two similar charges. The following were each lined 20s and' costs for exceeding the speed limit:— Archie Allan Tweedie. Mrs J. G. M’Donald, Victor Smith and William Witte. J. S. Hendry (Mr Hunter) was charged with driving a voliicle with no lights, with being drunk while in charge of a vehicle, and with failing to keep on the correct side of a road, it was stated in evidence that defendant when driving along North Road, about 400 yards on the Christchurch side of Belfast, collided with a gig- driven by W. Howard. The gig was capsized, and badly damaged, and the occupants were thrown out. Mr Hunter said that Hendry was a taxi-driver, of good reputation. He had dimmed his lights not long before he met Howard, or thought he had. Possibly in doing so he made the mistake of turning them out. Defendant was fined 20s and costs on the first charge. The second charge was dismissed, and on the third charge he was fined 40s and costsHelen Lily Turnbull was fined 5s and costs for riding on a footpath. William Flood, similarly charged, was convicted and discharged, and F. Sadler and James Ford Simpson were each fined 10s and costs. For riding a niotor-hicycle without having a certificate of ability, "William Davidson was fined 5s and costs. For pillion riding he was fined 10s and costs, and convicted and discharged on a charge of using a motor bicycle without having an identification mark thereon.

TRUANCY. The following fines were imposed for failing to send their children to school; —Richard Blackburn, 20s and costs on each of two charges; Mary Bugg, 20s and costs; Richard Davis, 5s and costs; D. M’Auliffe, 5s .on each of two charges; T. Rhodes, os; A. 0 Mills. Joseph Kirner, Mrs Cissie Norton, 10s and costs.
