Ihe Union Steam Ship Company notifies that there is a possibility of an early resumption of steamer sen-ices to Australia. The railway authorities in Christchurch have not received any instructions ('mm. 'Wellington in response to representations as to the carrying of school children on the railways. The head master of Christ’s College (Mr G. E. Blanch) waited on the Mayor this morning and requested him to back up the efforts being made to secure the transport ’of schoolboys on the trains during _ the vacation." The Mayor has therefore telegraphed to the General Manager of Railways asking him to make provision for the hoys going to their homes This morning, with due formality, before an audience of pressmen, the town clerk handed to the Mayor a cheque for £543 15s 3d as the net percentage handed over by the “Bigger” pierrots for the benefit of returned soldiers. The Mayor received the cheque with equal formality, and desired the town clerk to convey to the Diggers, on behalf of the returned soldiers? Ids very sincere recognition of their action I be sum will he allocated hv the Mayor among the funds concerned.
