THE CYCLE THIEF.
TO THE EDITOR. • feir ’T7 A .Paragraph in your journal gives the information that the Stipenaiaiy Magistrate at Invercargill had fallen a prey to a thief and lost hi* machine. Of course the S.M. is in receipt of a fairly good income and could easily procure a new one, but I want to point out that to many of us the loss of onr cycle is a real hardship. It must be conceded that this thieving is largely on the increase and I would suggest that one cause is the extremely light, sentences imposed on the convicted culprits by-Mr_ Bailey and his immediate predecessor in office. Another reason is that some second-hand dealers purchase the stolen machines at a ridiculously low price. With light fines and a ready market no wonder the business thrives. Some day our S.M.’s may come to the conclusion that salutary punishments are the only effective means of stamping out the evil,—l am, »to.. a , 0 ARGUS. August 18. ,
