THE NEW ZEALAND.

EXPECTED AT LYTTELTON ON AUGUST 30. THE CHRISCHURCH PROGRAMME. Li en ten aut-Command er Boyle, of HALS, New Zealand, waited on the Mayor this morning and supplied some particulars of the vessel’s stay at Lyttelton. It is hoped that she will arrive in Wellington on August 19. She will stay there, probably, for ten days, and then will come to Lyttelton, and probably stay there for ten days, afterwards returning to Wellington for three days. Lieutenant-Commander Boyle said that there would be no objection to the men staying all night in Christchurch; as a matter of fact they would like to be billeted amongst the citizens. There were more than 850 on board. Between 850 and 400, probably, would be allowed to get away at on© time. Half of them would bo given leave until seven o’clock in the morning, but some would be required back on the vessel by tho late train, at II p.m.

The ship’s company numbers approximately 700, the petty officers 100, the warrant officers 20, the gun-room officers 20, the ward-room officers (including three doctors) 30, and the admiral’s staff, six. The petty officers will appreciate visits to farms and stawhere they can shoot hares or rabbits. If sports are held, there should not he set races, such as 100 yards, but obstacle races, hack races, three-legged races, and driving races, amongst the sailors will be very popular. -Driving races are described as good fun. (Each competitor is blindfolded and is driven amongst pegs m the ground by a lady, who guides him with reins tied to his arms. No swimming carnival has been held in connection with the vessel yet. The only ball waa at Adelaide. There is an association football team on board; some of .those on board play hockey well, and Rugby football is played bv the officers.

On the amusement side there are a particularly good liaka team, a pip© band, an ordinary band, and a champion ballet dancer. These will give exhibitions of their talent, and the Mayor has suggested that the pipe band and some othar entertainers should give jwfomances on the trotting grounds It is suggested that if one-half of the men are invited to an outing, the same courtesy should bo extended to tne other half*
