SIR GEORGE FENWICK.

NEWSPAPER PROPRIETOR HONOURED. [Per Press Association.] ™ n DUNEDIN,- August 4. Mr George Fenwick, managing director of the " Otago Daily Times" and the Otago Witness " Company, has received a cable message from Mr Lloyd George informing him that the King Has conferred a knighthood on him. Sir George Fenwick. who holds the position of managing director of the company that owns the " Otago Daily rimes_ and the "Otago Witness," was bom in Sunderland, England, in 1847. ±le came to Melbourne with his parents m l»od, and three or four years later the family came to Dunedin. At the age of twelve Sir George Fenwick was apprenticed to the proprietor of the Otago Witness," where he remained «£u. semi :vear3 ' la,:ter going to the Otago Bailv Times " office. In 1866 he went to Sydney, where he obtained a position with Gibhs, Shailard and Co. I/ater he was selected for a position on the "Cleveland Bay Express/' a newspaper which had just started in lownsville, Northern Queensland, but after two or three months he returned to Dunedin, and obtained employment again with the " Daily Times." Later he joined Mr James Matthews in the proprietorship of the " Tuapeka Press," and in, 1869 the partners sold out and instituted the "Cromwell Argus." Eventually he returnee! to Dunedin, and commenced business as a general printer in partnership with Mr John Maokay. On the resignation of Captain Baldwin, he was appointed manager of the "'' Otago Guardian," erentually becoming part owner with Mr G. M. Reed, and twelve months later the firm purchased the "limes" and "Witness." Sir George was one of the founders of the first United Press Association of New Zealand, was for a number of years chairman of the Dunedin City and' Suburban Tramways Company, Limited, and was the founder of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In other ways Sir George Fenwick has been, and continues to be, an active worker in matters affecting the social well-being of the community.
