CABLE DELAYS.
FURTHER EXPLANATION. [Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Juno 18. The Postmaster-General ban received later advices as to the delay on the cables, to the effect that there was a delay on the Eastern line by the Codes route of eight days, and tins was duo to the cutting out of the original Malta and Alexandria route- The latter cable would require 200 knots ol neiv cable for restoration. For the next month it would not be possible to alter the rules regarding full rate traffic (which is not now accepted at all) for Australia and New Zealand. The advice stated further that one of the principal reasons for the interruptions at present was duo tio the normal deterioration of cables and the inability of, the companies during the war years to effect repairs owing to submarine risks and the difficulty or getting new stock. Mr Mac Donald said that the British Government and the censor had advised that on no account must tire New Zealand Government allow coded telegrams to be sent until after peace bad been declared. This applied to private codes. Mr Mac Donald added that this decision was quite definite, and was not the decision of the New Zealand Government.
