For a considerable time tho residents of Redeliffs have been endeavouring to secure tho front portion of tho rifle range as a public reserve for the purpose of forming {l sports ground, and, also as a site for the building of a town hall. llepresent-a.iions have been made to the Borough Council, and a largely signed petition wag sent to the Defence authorities urging that tho land should bo handed over. A reply was received this week from tho Minister of Defence, stating that the matter had been fully considered, and he regretted that tho request could not he acccdej to. The Minister states that the rifle range site was acquired, and the ranges thereon constructed by the Department at a large cost to meet training requirements of the units in Christchurch and surrounding districts, and it cannot be agreed that any portion of the area shall be surrendered, for other purposes, riio residents are naturally very disappointed with the reply, but they are. nob going to let the matter drop. An influential deputation Ims been appointed to wait on the Minister when he next visits Christchurch, and the Mayor is to bo asked to introduce the deputation. BOROUGH COUNCIL NOTES. ■ The Mayor, tho Hon John Barr, M.L.G. ( is at present in Wellington representing the borough at the Town Planning Conference. It has been decided that th© recently elected council shall make a thorough inspection of tbo whole borough, so that they will bo thoroughly conversant with all tho municipal undertakings, os well as tho needs of each part of the district. Tbe brigade lias decided to bold its annuel social about the second week of Juno, ami a. sub-committee consisting Superintendent Carter, Brambnian G. Hines and tho secretary, Air R. Lmdroos, has boon appointed to make all arrangements. The members of the brigade have accepted the invitation of the Christchurch Fire Brigade to assist in the torchlight procession which is to take place at the peace celebnvtions. A SOCIAL EVENING. A very pleasant “ kitchen evening ” was given for Miss H. G-. Illingworth, who is to be married shortly. The function took place at the residence of Mrs G. Brewer, and a large number of guests were present. Many useful articles were received. Miss’ Illingworth suitably thanking the donors. During the evening musical items were given by Miss Thornlcy, Miss Short, Air L. Homershom, Air M. Lawrence. Air R. Bnokenhnm, Air J. Roberts, Air, Mrs and Master Marcantelli, Air D, Harris and Airs Thornier, SUMNER BAND OF HOPE. Tlie annual meeting was > held this week, when Airs I. Wilson presided over a good attendance. An invitation m to be extended to'the Svdenham United Band of Hope to assist with the opening programme, which will be given on June 13. Ho looks none the worse for his experiences 'and Ims completely recovered from his wounds. Word has been received that Private C. Mbit© is returning and is due in Port Chalmers very shortly. Sergeant ComraV Ferguson, whose parents now reside in Palmerston North, has returned and has Icon spending a few weeks with bis mother and father- He will leave Palmerston in a few days and will reach Sumner next week. RICHMOND HILL GOLF CLUB. . The members of tbe- Richmond Hill Golf Club commenced the annual mixed foursomes competition for the Rawnsley Cup this week- This is perhaps the most popular competition tbo club has <m its programme, and this year no fewer thau twenty-eight entries were received- Tko qualifying round resulted in the following remaining in the competitionMr and Airs O. With a view of keeping members together during the winter months the commit toe of the Bowling Club has decided to hold a, “Flying Fifty” billiard tournament each week.
