TRAMWAYMEN’S UNION.
GENERAL MEETINGS. General meetings of the Christchurch Tramway Employees’ Union were held f,' 10 a.m. and 8. p.ra, on Tuesday. Mr E Snow, president, was in the chair. it was decided to take a ballot for tile election of officers at the annual meeting to bo held on Tuesday. The question had been raised as to whether such a vote as decided upon, a plebiscite vote, should be taken. In reply to a letter from tho secretary, Air H. Hunter, asking that, in connection with the accident to Conducto' J. H, Campbell on the Sumner lino on April 28, the board should accept lull responsibility for accident and bear all expenses, including the conductor’s lost time, tho Tramway Board wrote stating that, without prejudice, it would, on account of tho severe injuries to Conductor Campbell, pay hospital and medical expenses, but would give half pay only for the tune lost. Hie union resolved to again request the board to pay full wages for the time lost, and, failing satisfaction, to take legal advice with a view to initiating an action for damages. The board also wrote, in reply to a letter from the secretary asking that the questions of . holiday allowances to employees leaving the service and the application of the preference clause should be refeired to tho Disputes Committee at an early date, that Mr T .H. Da.vey, a, member of the committee, was indisposed, but a meeting would be arranged txi soon as possible. A letter was received from the' Labour Representation Committee inviting the union to nominate suitable persons as candidates for election to Parliament, and it was decided to submit the following names:—Avon, Mr D. G. Sullivan; Christohurclv East, Mr' H* Hunter; Christchurch North, Mr H n’ Armstrong; Lyttelton, Air J. Ai’Combs. The Moulders’ Union wrote appealing for financial assistance for the widow and three children of one of its lato members. I. was decided to issue a subscription list on the next pay dav for the purpose of raising the funds asked for The New Zealand Tramways Federation wrote asking the union to recomn end a date for the annual conference, unich is to be held iu Christchurch this year, * Ine union decided to recommend that it should be held on Alonday, June u3, and appointed a committee, consisting ot Alessrs F. Birch. W. J. Wright, A. L. Brown, A. T. Boanas, O. Barber and A. APDougall. with the incoming president, Air J. Wilson, ex officio, to draft remits for the conference, make arrangements for the entertainment of the visiting delegates, and report to tho next meting of the union. Messrs Wilson and Birch were elected delegates to the conference. it . was decided to notify motormen on routes Nos. 2, 9 and 12 of the inadvisability of overrunning the signal at. the Colombo Street railway crossing, because if they did they would probably be reported by the Railway Department. The derailing points are about half a car length past the signal, and motormen are in tho habit of running past the signal right up to the points. It was also decided to write to the Tramway Board requesting it to replace the fanlights behind tho motormen on cars Nos. 162 to 171 inclusive, these I’.phts having been removed during the influenza epidemic, and complaints' haring been received that they caused motormen to be subject to* frequent colds.
