TO-DAY’S CARNIVAL Tho Sumner gala was opened this morning in fine weather, tbo strong easterly liaving a. tendency to veer to the north under calmer conditions. Tho u luho of tho waterfront, From tho tramway bridge Up to the Cave Rock, is looking gay with flags and hunting. .The rock itself bps boon specially decorfltod» n| >d tho pier is hung with coloured flags on tlie one side and coloured electric lanterns on the other, ready for the illuminations this evening. The object of the gala is to clear tbo debt on the Rowing Club shed and repair the gear ready for tho return of the boys from tho front. Mesdnmos Loach and Hunt, with the assistance of a number of young ladies, have decorated tho sweets stall with the club colours and bare included a beautiful floral anchor. A large tea tout is being managed by a local committee of ladies and a produce stall, erected near by, is in charge of Mosdamcs E. L, H. Brown,. Fountain Barber, Allen and Misses Illingworth and Richards. From soon after two o’clock the trams to Sumner arrived heavily loaded. The weather cleared to bright blue sky, and with water craft of all sorta about the pier the beaob took on a lively appearance. An event of special attraction, near the Pier was a demonstration of .the .Royal Life Saving Society’s land drill in the methods of release and rescue, followed, by a display of rescue work in the water. A full team of twelve, under Mr B. S. Knox, secretary of the Surf Association, were loudly applauded for their work. *A display of surf work and life saving drill work was also given bv representatives from all the surf clubs, constituting a record display. Master Jack. Breward gave a splendid exhibition of swimming and diving in deep water by the Pier, and wag warmly applauded for his clever performance. The sailing events are being concluded under first-class weather conditions.
