TO-DAY’S SITTING. CHRISTCHURCH. , r S. T3._ M’Cnrthy. S.M.. presided at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. DRUNKENNESS. Three first offenders for drunkenness wore each fined os and costs, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. AN OLD OFFENDER. ' Mary M’Kegney, on remand from ” ednesday, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having committed a grossly indecent act in Lichfield Street on March 4. Giving evidence the accused comntenccd to violently harangue the Court_ on what she alleged were the injustices that she had been subjected to. She stated that she had been trying to do her best, hut “ a drop of drink ” had been responsible for her present appearance. Hie Magistrate had great difficulty in stemming the accused’s flow of talk. •™r Garthy stated that he hud given the .accused a- chance last week, and he did not feel inclined to give' her another one. Ho sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment and two years’ reformative treatment. T hen sentence was passed the ac-, cused commenced to sob piteously and implored the Magistrate to give her a chance to go back to tho country.” I 1 or some time after she left her wailings and bcscechings were audible. FAILING TO ACCOUNT. John Shannon was charged with having failed to account for tho sum of £1 6s to the Colonial Mutual Life Insurance Society. Air C. S. Thomas, who appeared for accused, said that the case was a most peculiar one. The accused had been a collector for the company for. some time when he got into difficulties with the books, which had been very badly muddled. Air J. A. Cassidy, who appeared for the company. said that he did not wish to press the charge. Accused was convicted and discharged.
