WORKMEN'S HOMES.
■ —. ——» AUCKLAND PROPOSALS ■DEFERRED. [Put. Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 6. . The City Council to-night adopted a recommendation by a committee of the whole council that proposals for the erection of workers’ dwellings in connection wiu uaidi a loan of £250,000 is proposed, should be deferred. Tho report stated that though there were in the city a number of dwellings not desirable, the buildings by-laws and sanitary inspection were sufficient safeguards against them being a menace to the public health. Further, that having regard to the existing financial obligations of the council and in view of the reports upon the council’s land advisers, the committee was of opinion that the proposed action might be deferred, at any rate for the present. The committee was also of opinion that while several areas in the thickly-populated portion of the city might with advantage be remodelled, any such -policy should not be adopted at present owing to financial obligations already undertaken. Another aspect for, consideration was the high cost of building material and the difficulty of obtaining many lines. The council adopted a resolution that the Works Committee should he asked to consider the question of the possibility of remodelling an area in the city and providing some small houses for workers. It also resolved that the Government should be urged to form a model suburb for workers’ houses at Orakei.
