Among the passengers on tlio Moeraki, which arrived at Wellington from Sydney yesterday afternoon, are 152 returned soldiers (Draft 172). Gun practice will be conducted at Fort Jervois to-morrow between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Shipping and fishing boats are warned to keep in tho fairway to ensure safety. I'ho Minister of Defence has received advice that the Forty-first Reinforcements have reached a port of call all well, and that the last New Zealand hospital ship to leave the Dominion has reached a port of destination. A scheme for the raising of a loan of £165,000 for expenditure upon street improvement was outlined in' a memorandum presented to the Auckland City Council by the Mayor. Mr J. H. Gunson. Mr A. J. Entrican moved that tho memorandum be referred to a special committee, consisting of the whole council. He said he considered that every councillor was indebted to the Mayor for his very able report, and would also be delighted that something was to be done. By putting tho main streets in first-class order, reducing its permanent staff, and doing tho projected work by contract, tho council would bo taking a truly economic step. After further discussion the motion was agreed to. Writing on Monday, the Mosgiel correspondent of the Otago “ Daily Times ” stated that the low-lying parts of tho Taieri are under water, and many settlers, were obliged to shift their stock to higher ground. Berwick suffered a mild flood on Sunday, but tho waters had disappeared to a great extent on the following’day. Farm work, which has been interfered with by bad weather of late, has got a further set-back, aud it will probably bo about three weeks before a start can bo made on inany farms. If the water lies too long it may mean re-sowing. The contour channel was very high on Sunday, but on Monday the water had dropped considerably. Tho Taieri River, fed from Central Otago, rose slowly, but it had gone back a little. The rise was not of an alarming nature. Violet Day will bo celebrated this year on Wednesday, September 4, in aid of the Red Cross Convalescent Hostel. Tho usual competitions for tho best six violets and tho best bunch not exceeding on c hundred violets, will be held. Stalls for tho sale of flowers, cakes, eggs, books and fancy goods will bo in evidence, and the “ Lyttelton Times” Red Cross workers will*have a stall of their own.
