MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

+ TO-DAY'S SITTING. CHRISTCHURCH, Mr S. E. M’Carthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-oay. DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined ss. in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Edward Stanley Brown, n. second offender, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. "William Cushion pleaded guilty to a. charge of having been drunk and of having procured liquor during the currency of a. prohibition order. Sub-Inspector Mullany said tiiat if was the second offence for drunkenness within six months, and the first breach of the order, lie considered that accused was a. fit subject for an inebriates’ borne. Accused was committed to Pnkatoa for a period of twelve months. CHARGE OF THEFT. George Edward Prohble, an elderly man, was charged that at Fairlie bo stole a bicycle, value £4, the property of Hugh Mac Donald. On the application of Sub-Inspector Mullany accused was remanded to appear at Fairlie on August 30. SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT. Alfred Herbert Bamford pleaded not guilty to-a- charge of having failed to keep a. wages and time hook as required by the Act. Ho was convicted and fined £‘2 and costs. Timothy Cotter (Mr Hoban) was also charged with failing to keep a wages and time hook. Mr Hohuu said that the defendant's daughter, who kept the books, was ou a. holiday, and during the time she was away the book had not been properly entered. He asked the Magistrate if it, was necessary under the Act that the book should bo entered daily. The Magistrate held that it was necessary. Mr Hohan said that in that case the defendant, would plead guilty, but it was only a technical broach. He would ask that only a nominal fine be inflicted. Defendant was fined Is and.costs.
