THE SOLDIERS

Acting-Captain G. Kingscote, who is reported seriously ill, is well known in the borough as the late owner of Sumner Vale. PATRIOTIC CONCERT. The Town Hall was only moderately filled on Wednesday, wiuen the Red Triangle Company gave a concert in aid of Hie tunas of the Sumner Tramway Copper Trail Committee. In every sense tlio occasion warranted larger patronage. The proceeds were for tno boys in the trenches, and the company was well known lor its excellent programmes. During the course of the evening the deputy-chairman of the committee, Mr G. AV. C. Smithson, heartily thanked (he artists for the entertainment they had provided.. THE COPPER TRAIL COAIATITTEE, Apparently there are still residents who lail to recognise the fact that a big local effort is being made to supply comforts to the boys in tho trenches through tho medium of the Lady Liverpool Committee. Too local committee, However, are steadily and persistently pressing its claims lor support. The toilowmig attendance was recorded at Thursday's meeting Messrs G. AV. C. Smithson (chairman) and Messrs G. Alexander (secretary), C. Dash (treasurer), AA. S. Aiitchell, C. Benjamin, Woods, A r erc, 11. N. Buttle, F., Barlow. E. L. H. Brown, T. E. Whitfield, AV’! I. Raphael, G. F. Alien, G. Coleman, J. Gregory Hunt, u. C, Jamieson, J. M. B. Crawford and Bishop. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the local ladies’ committee for refreshments provided at the Red Triangle concert.

The chairman stated that a reply had been received from Heathcolo stating that residents there were prepared to assist the movement if a concert party was provided. So far favourable replies had not been received from cither Lyttelton or Avoolston. It was decided to write to the executive, pointing our. the present position, and'asking that, influence should be used to bring the whole of the section into line, so" that a satisfactory result might be secured. It was decided to make a big local effort during tho influx of visitors ; n the coming school holidays, and the following snb-commitloo wa s appointed to report to the next meeting Messrs Mitchell, Vere, TVf If. Raphael G. W. C. Smithson and G. A. Alexander. A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT. The committee who arranged the recent patriotic dance announce a ca v h of £36 2s 7d, Th.anks to a band of hard workers and a circle of generous supporters this effort ranks as one of the great succcsses ; of the season, and it certainly seems a little unfair, to put it very mildly, that when all give so freely and willingly the only authority to profit by the venture is the borough itself, which makes a charge for the Town Hall, It is thought, that when bona, fide efforts of this sort ar c . made and a substantial margin of financial success shown, this item might reasonably be refunded in the interests of soldiers at the front. A TOWN - CLOCK.

During the trench comfort campaign the borough is to possess a clock. This uull be erected at the Council Chambers and will indicate, in unmistakable figures, the progress made from time to_ time in respect to the total sum raised in the borough for the Copper Trail._ The town clerk, Mr C. Dash, kns kindly offered to keep tlie lt correct tame/’ and as the fixture is in the hands of Mr H. C. .1 amieson it is expected to have it erected immediately. BOROUGH PROGRESS.

The following figures, showing the value of buildings for which permits had been issued during the past four years ending July 31 were submitted at the last meeting of th e Borough Council; —1914-1915, £17,269: 19151916, £16,013; 1916-1917, £11.940 10s; 1-917-1918, £11,798 10s. The Mayor expressed his appreciation of the steady progress being made in spite of war conditions, and stated that the prospects wore distinctly good.
