COUNTER-ATTACKS MET. A. and N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter. (Received. August 23, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, August 22. Sir Douglas Haig reports (4.45 a.m.): Wo attacked tho enemy’s position between the Somme and the Ancre. and by nightfall on "Wednesday our patrols had progressed on the left bank of the Ancro southward and south-eastward of < Beaucourt-Sor-Ancre. W’e maintained the positions gained yesterday northward ot tho Ancro against strong counter-attacks in the afternoon and evening. On the Miranmont-Achiet-le-Grand front fresh counter-attaclte’de-veloped this morning opposite Miraumont and Tries (west of iiapaumo.) ( We captured from 2000 to 3000 prisoners and a fow guns. On Wednesday -wo made further progress eastward and north-eastward of Morville and reached the outskirts of Neuf Bevquin. W'o captured a strong point northward of Baillenl and repulsed, after sharp fighting, a strong local counter-attack against Locrehof Farm, north-westward of Dranoutre. Further fighting occurred at night on this sector.
