One of the quickest rises on record, even in these days of rap’d promotion, is that of Lieutenant-Colonel James Walsh. This gallant officer was a ser-geant-major when the old army went to Franco in August, 1914. Bravery in the field won him his commission two years ago. Before very long he wms a captain, and his promotion to major soon followed. Three months ago he was appointed lieutenant-colonel and Riven the command of a battalion of the Essex Bcgiraent. Ho won the D.S.O. at Camhrai, where he hold acritical position for many hours under heavy fire. Colonel Walsh is now the only officer in his division who went to France with the original Expeditionary Force.
