Tho hostesses at the. Returned Soldiers’ Club for the past week have been Mrs Harris, Mrs Menloye, Miss Rutherford. Miss Hamilton, Mrs Mathias, Mrs Hankins. Miss Elsie Cooper and Miss Edna Barrett. Yesterday afternoon Miss Elsie Cooper arranged an exceedingly enjoyable concert for the soldiers, which was appreciated by a large audience, those contributing being Miss Madeline, Jennings, Miss Olga Wacked, Miss Lorimer, Misses Lucas (2), Miss Hazlett and Mr Cade.

To those who delight in the beauties of interior decoration Crystal Palace will ho an abiding joy. The beautiful auditorium carried out in the Adams stylo was the subject of many eulogistic remarks on Saturday evening. The colour scheme of the interior is a beautiful Wcdgewood blue, the delicacy of which under tho soft light is wonderfully enhanced, and the pretty setting on tho stage, with two rharmiii" illuminated fountains, is the touch of an artist. The building is roomy and in the- foyer there arc cloak rooms and a lounge which adds greatly to the comfort of the theatre. Tlie opening on Saturday attracted a crowded audience and in every way Crystal Palace started on its career in art auspicious manner.

The opening of the Richmond Hill golf links on Saturday was marked by the attendance of a large .number of lady members and their friends. Amongst those present were—Mesdames G. Gusset, 0. H. Tho ladies’ programme for the season provides for * modal handicaps' each month, two mixed foursomes Red Cross matches, and the qualifying round for the Rawnsley Clip, also for the Rod Cross Fund. Miss J. N. Tcape, of the massago section of the Military Nursing Brandi of the N.Z.E.F., w)io has been spending a few days in Christchurch on final leave, left on Saturday evening for Wellington. Miss Tcape, who will return to the front shortly, is well-known in ambulance circles, having been a member of the Avonside Nursing Division, and also in connection with swimming, and especially with the work of the Royal Life-saving Society, of which she holds the award of merit and honorary instructor's certificate. Miss Teape gained the diploma for massage at the Otago Fnivorsity School of Massage, and is going on active service as a masseuse.

At the Art Gallery.

The Christchurch Art Society’s animal exhibition and the Red Cross entertainments in connection therewith closed on Saturday, after an entiuely successful season. The afternoon found the Art Gallery crowded, nearly all tho workers of the Red Cross Depot in Christchurch being there as Airs Boyle’s guests, besides a considerable number of others- A specially delectable afternoon tea was provided, the hostess being Airs Algar Williams, Airs Richard Allen and the Alisses Humphreys, who were assisted by Airs C. AA'. Reid, Airs Henry AVood. Aliss Hope Wood, Aliss Davis Aliss Joan Lee, Aliss Cowlishaw, Airs Rich and Aliss AA'ells. A delight- j fnl musical programme was arranged by Airs Gower Burns, who, besides superintending the concert, sang three songs beautifully. A pleasant surprise to everybody was the rich contralto voice of Aliss Beryl Alarsden, who made her first public appearance, and it is to he hoped will be heard often in Christchurch. Her songs were warmly encored. Aliss Betty Cottcrill also sang several songs very prettily, which included two in French. Air Alonteath contributed several vocal items to the programme, which were warmly applauded. Airs Livingstone played brilliantly two pianoforte solos, and also accompanied the singers. Amongst those present were Airs Holland, Lady Donniston, Airs Boyle. Air and Mrs A. E. G. Rhodes, Airs AATgram, Mrs Vernon, Airs Stevenson, Air and Airs Henry Cotter!!!, Air and Airs CarcyHill, Airs Acland, Airs and Aliss Marsh, Airs Symes, Aliss Gwen Aloore, Miss Guthrie. Airs Robinson. Clark, Aliss Overton, Alisses Tabart, Airs Alanning and Aliss Ruin Alanning, Airs Turnbull, Aliss Wilson and Aliss Stoddart. Jn the evening [ there was also a large attendance The supper was provided and served by the ladies belonging to the bandage ! room of the depot, Airs Acland and Airs Alarsh being in charge. To further augment Hip takings an artisti-cally-arranged stall, well stocked with dainty hand-made lingerie, boudoir caps and bags of swcct-smelling pot pound _and lavender, was in charge of Airs AAratt, Airs Bennett and Mrs Herbert, who completely sold out quite early in the evening. A successful finale was thp well-arranged and enjoyable concert of Airs Jolt’s. Songs were given by Airs Gilbert Hutton and Aliss Bessie Olds, both of whom sang expressively. _ The Licdertafel Quartet were heard in several part songs, and also gave a fine_ battle hymn, "Airs Gilbert Hutton taking the solo part with excellent effect. Humorous recitations and monologues, contributed By Air . Robert Malcolm, were thoroughly ap-! predated. _ Air Ernest Cordon-' gave j two fine pianoforte solos with diameter and sympathy. Airs .Toll played the accompaniments with true thought and consideration for each individual performer—an all too rare acquisition.

CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

I / Students’ Day.

College social life nowadays is comparatively dull, but on Saturday the students of Canterbury College' had quite if "gay time with a picnic and spurts gathering in the Domain at New Brighton in the afternoon and a high tea in the Pier Hall, ending with a .jolly dance, in the evening. Althougii so many of the older students have gone to iho front, over two hundred were seated at tea. Mr Kincaid welcomed the new students and also invited the secretaries of the various affiliated ebbs in connection with the college to address them, which was done in a pleasant informal manner. After tea the hall, which was decorated with flags and streamers of maroon and gold, the college colours, was cleared for dancing. Professor Blunt and Professor Gahbatt were and an apology was received from Mr J. 0. Adams, chairman of the Board of Governors. Mrs Wall, wife of Professor Wall, acted as chaperone. Those present' at the dance were;— Misses Greig, Robinson, Johnston, Gunn, Richmond, M'Koage, Percy, Andrews, Stewart, Vallance, Willeox (2), Archenhold Grant (2), Turner, Watson, and Messrs T. C. Kincaid, Atack, M’Cnllum, Kinpenberger, Taylor, Gee, BanerstocK, Rennie, Skoglund and Hardy. These functions were given to welcome newcomers, enabling this year’s students to meet previous years' students and one another.
