On Saturday night last -.no members of the Upper Kiccarton Hoys’ and Girls’ Clubs held a most successful social to welcome home Lance-Corporal C.- Parker, the first member of tlie Boys’ Chib Unit joined the colours. Great credit is due to tlio Girls’ Club for the way they pul through the excellent programme. wliv-h consisted of games, Mings, recitations and competition*. Mr AV. Lnnn acted as pianist for the evening. The excellent work Ilia I Clarence Paricer had done ns one of the founders of the club and, as a club member, and also how pleased they were to have him bark in fairly good health, was interred to in speeches given by the president, the Bev H. Yorke. the instructor. Air C. Ackerley. and the secretary, Air C. E, Carleton. At supper a toast. “ Absent members of the Boys’ Chib who are somewhere in France,” was proposed by Air C. E. Carleton and responded to by the Bev H. A’ovke. The singing of “ Anld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. ' ' v BED CROSS. The Upper Kiccarton Bed Cross garden party will he held at the vicarage, Upper Ricenrton. this afternoon. The, opening ceremony by Afrs A. Boyle will take place at 2 p.m. These beautiful grounds, which have been kindly lent by tlie Bev H. T. Yorke, arc an idealplace for a garden party, and given fine weather tin- fete should be a huge success. There will he the usual stalls, produce, home dainties, sweets, and so on, and a number of soldiers’ packets will be on sale. Amusements for both young and old will be provided, donkey rides, hoopla, action song and dance, nail-driving competition, bran pie. LAAA’X TENNIS. The return match between St Peter’s and Biccartoit Domain Tennis Clubs was played on the Kiccarton Domain courts last Saturday, tiie Domain Club winning by 49 games. Clarke, has been transferred to the Second London General Hospital, suffering from trench fever. Private E. Reese, of Upper Riocartou, mho left with the Twenty-fifth Reinforcements and mas severely mounded last October, is on the road to recovery. He is now at Broekenhnrst Hospital and will probably be invalided home. AVord has been reeeived that Private Albert Fine, late of Elizabeth Street, mho left with the Twenty-eighth Reinforcements,. is suffering from trench fever. Trooper Stewart Murray, formerly of Blenheim Road, writes to say that he mas with the forces at the taking of •lernsalom. He also mentions that they mere having a taste () f winter weather. WIDENING POSTER’S ROAD. The residents of Rieearton are. greatly indebted to the Saleyards Company tor the real public spirit shown by it in widening to a full chain the continual ion of Poster’s Road.

WHARENUI SCHOOL. The Wharonui School Committee met on Tue-day evening, Mr T. Habbcrfield presiding. Mrs Waite, secretary of the Lower Riccarton Rod Cross, wrote thanking the scholars for the donation of ‘£l Os -ijd collected at the school concert. Mr G. "White, delegate to the School Committees’ Association, gave a resume of the platform adopted by the association. The master’s report showed a roll of 355 with an average attendance of 321, Three names were added to the honours hoard—Harold Eaton. Reginald Vincent and James Archibald, the last named making the supreme sacrifice. The names on the hoard now number 20, A vote of thanks was passed to Mr T. Stokes, jun.. for ornamental- writing on honours board. COAL FOR SCHOOLS. Owing to the meagre allowances to schools for incidental expenses the local committee has ni the past found it difficult to keep tip the coal supply. I’rospects for the future are brighter, however, as the Education Board is arranging to buy coal in bulk and supply committees at the lowest possible price. SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ ELECTIONS. Nominations for committee close on Monday, April 15, with the chairman, from whom forms can bn obtained. Intending candidates should not overlook the fact that nominations must be on the form supplied for that purpose. BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. Members ol the Upper Riccarton and Soekbum Burgesses’ Association are taking'a keen interest in the general, welfare of the district. It is mainly duo to their efforts that the- Pnbilic! Library, which had been sadly neglected for many years, is,now on the Way to resuscitation, UPPER RICCARTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The members of the Upper Riccarton .School Committee are deserving of praise for the manner in which they are working to keep down the expenditure in connection with the upkeep of the school. They have been working for weeks of an evening, cutting up fire-: wood for tlie use of the school during the winter months. PUBLIC LIBRARY. The Upper Riccarton Public Library Committee met on Wednesday. Mr Newham was appointed temporary, custodian. It was decided to write to Mr G. Witty, M.P., asking him to approach the Government and endeavour 10 get permission to dispose of the present site, so that the committee could purchase one now under offer. The committee decided to meet at the library on Sunday morning to inspect the building and the books. A public meeting was held on Thursday to consider matters in connection with the library. There was a large attendance. Mr Forsyth presided. The chairman stated that the members of the Public Library Committee had placed their resignations in the hands of Air H.ii. one of the trustees, uwid' had decided In give up the books, etc., to a newly appointed committee, should one be appointed, failing which that the property should bo left with tlioi trustees. The W.E.A. held a very successful evening in the Town Hall on Alondny. The tutor, Air J. G. Poison. ALA., occupied the chair, it was decided to continue the class and to affiliate with the W.E.A.
