SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC,

On i'jastpv Monday rite Methodist Sunday scholars were given their nnininl picnic, the site -elected being ;i line largo plantation in Hillsborough. Despite the recent, rain and the threatening sky n large uuinher attended, and the outing was much enjoyed, Tlte superintendent, Mr J. id. White, and the other teachers and parents worked hard to make the day enjoyable. and were, rewarded by seeing the youngsters happy. Races were got off during the afternoon. OUR BOYS. Inn 1 hope they won't give peace now till they completely conquer Germany.” SOLDIERS’ SOCIAL, There was a crowded attendance at the Henthcote Chib Hall on Wednesday night to bid “ an revoir ” to departing Heatbcote soldiers, and also to offer a hearty welcome to some who had returned. The social was arranged bv the Patriotic Committee, whose chairman, Air C. I la veil. and vice-chairman. Air Janies AA eir. presided over the gathering. The stage was tastefully decorated. After a tew remarks by the chairman the audience sang the National Anthem. Jlieh followed a most enjoyable programme, rendered bv Ali'ss Mary Smith. Air G. AVatt and the Rodchffs quartet party, Alessrs H Adley, S. Gibbs. J. Peek and L. Shaw. Ali’ss Smith’s dumb-bell exhibition was splcnuidly done and was loudly applauded. Airs AVatt s songs wore rendered with their usual charm. The solos, duets and quartets given by the visitors were received with the liveliest aonreciation, the_ singers seeming tireless in their desire to please the audience. Afiss Qiieree and Airs C. Smith wore the accompanists. I he most import ant function of the et cuing, that of expressing the feelings of the residents towards the soldier guests came next. Privates \V. E. Evans and Ralph Anson, both of whom are down on final leave, were presented by Air AVeir, on behalf of the Heathcote public, each with n soldier’s complete writing wallet and a handsome pipe with tobacco. In a brief speech expression was given 'to the appreciation and admiration of the residents, )vlio wore confident that these men would uphold the record of the Dominions soldiers on the field, and who looked forward to their safe return. Both recipients responded amid loud cheers. On the stage also were Riflemen L. J- AA eir and B. G. Field, who returned in the last batch of wounded. They were greeted with vociferous applause. A short speech of welcome was made by Air Fla veil, win, said how Mad everybody was at their return. Both responded, and wore greeted with "For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Privates M. Fla veil. J. Salt and J. and Tv Du-kpy -were also prpsput. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the local and visiting performers and therein!'. After refreshments the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. BRISTOL FAIR, this week the pre-ideiil received <i. note saying, A iriend of mine has given me 5s as a donation for the Bristol hair bund. Miss Weir lias been very kind to Airs s son while in hospital. Hoping I am not too late, ■ Yours sincerely . ' A contribution o! £1 from the Henthcote fund inspired this letter.
