A report was received from tho senior inspector to tho following effect;— Cases had occurred in which teachers both in South Canterbury and AVesthind had adopted tho books used by the old North Canterbury Board; these to ad uts had acted under the impression that they Toro justified in such a course, the inspectors having recognised all books that had been on the lists of the old hoards.” A letter was received from the Clan(leuoyo School Committee protesting against the conijiiual change of school nooks ns being detrimental to the children and a continual charge on tho parents. PUPIL TEACHER REGULATION'S. The Senior Inspector submitted & draft of some slight: alterations recommended as regards tho board’s pupil teacher regulations, as follows I n selecting candidates for appointment as pupil teachers, the board will, other Hungs being equal, give preference to candidates that have passed the matriculation examination of any British University, or have at least obtained a pai tial pass for class D in the teachers’ certificate, examination: that have gained a lower leaving certificate; tlmk have passed'tho intermediate examiu-' ntion or have gained an intermediate certificate: that have passed tivo years in a secondary school, or in the soeonciary classes of a distinct high school or in the seventh standard of any other public school. I’he course of study should include reading, writing, singing. Nature study, drawing, noecllework (for s.oine branch of handwork nr domestic science and methods of teaching. Instruction in methods of teaching should be continuous throughout the term of service. ” The recommendations were adopted BUILDINGS. The Buildings •Committee reported ■bat a grant ot .CRJt) bad been nindo by the Department for repairs and alterations at the Blackball and Cobdcu .Schools, A deputation, consisting of -Messrs Inglis and AVinsor, had waited upon the board, asking for the erection of two additional class-rooms at the Somerlicld School, and the removal of the temporary building at present In use. It was decided that the arebitect should have the temporary building improved to provide accommodation in the'meantime, and that the ifspeclor should be asked to further consider the question when the new assistant was appointed. The District Health Officer bad reported on the condition of Hie teacher's residence at Spreydon, and recommended certain repairs and alterations. It was decided to forward the report to the School Committee. The architect was asked to carry out necessary repairs in accordance with the health officer’s report. The Department bad written stating that a grant would lie made towards the cost of erecting four now class-rooms at Sydenham. It was proposed to call for tenders for (be work, to be opened at next meeting of the board. The report was adopted, and the board further decided to grant the request of the Kindergarten Association, uhicb asked for the services of Hie board's architect to draw plans for the new Phillipstown kindergarten school. COAL SUPPLIES. The special committee appointed to report mi the question of the possibility of securing coal in bulk for tho purpose of distribution to school cmmittees reported that a circular hud been received from the Christchurch Coal Trade Committee, asking what schools it would bo necessary io provide coal lor during the coming winter. An early reply was desired, a:; coal supplies were very short and tho public services and essential industries bad to be first of all piovided for. Ilolief Committee desires it to bo known, on behalf of sufferers by the recent bush fires, that the committee lias in band a full supply of all kinds of clothing, and that no’further clothing should be forwarded, but bods, bedding and financial assistance are still required. HELP FROM CHRISTCHURCH. _Tbo Mayor’s fund for sufferers by the North Island bush fires has been opened by two subscriptions, one from the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association fo" £‘JO and the other from Mr A. AV. Rutherford for £lO. o been sent to all committees except those whose schools were situated on the West Const, and that when received the replies would bo tabulated and the information sent to the Coal Trado Committee. In view of the inquiry made by the Christchurch Coal Trade Committee, which presumably would allocate supplies to the public schools, the committee felt it to he undesirable to proceed any further at present with the board's scheme for supplying school committees with coal in bulk. The report was adopted. SCHOOL COMMITTEE ACCOUNTS. The auditor reported on the audit of the school committee accounts for the past year, and staled that the finances of committees were generally in a healthy state, the surplus, in fact, in the case of many of'the smaller committees appearing to bo larger than was desirable or necessary. There were few cases of unfinaneial committees. He stated that in the majority of cases the accounts wore well kept. The thanks of the board were due to secretaries and chairmen generally for the care and scrupulous honesty with which they had discharged their duties in connection with the school funds. It was decided to send out a circular to school committees thanking them for their services, pointing out certain matters that might assist them in keeping their accounts, and asking committees who did not keep their money in a bank to do so if possible. FINANCIAL, Accounts amounting id £1037 8s lid were passed for payment. GAMMACK SCHOLARSHIP. AI iss Margaret Johnston, winner of the Gammack scholarship, not wishing to accept the scholarship, it was decided to offer it to Miss Hilda M. F. Valentine, Timaru, the next candidate on Hie list. HIGH SCHOOL BOARDS. The following representatives of the board on High School Boards were reappointed -Akaroa. Mr AV. K. Virtue; Ashburton, Messrs -I. Ticker ami AV, B. Denshire: Hokitika. Air 11, L Michel; Rangiora, Air H. Boyd: AValma tc, Air G. J. A. Shackleton. A DONATION. The master at Springhurn reported that, a Airs Campbell had donated £do , lor the purpose of awarding each year I four special prizes for diligence, and that the committee wished the board to act as trustees and invest tho money. It was decided to accede to the request, the money to be invested in the war loan. NORTH NEAV BRIGH TON'S NEEDS. A deputation representative of the AVaimairi and AA'ost Brighton Burgesses’ Association wailed on tho board and urged the necessity for increased accommodation at tlie North New Brighton School, and the making of provision for higher standards, up to the sixth standard The chairman said the board was endeavouring to acquire the freehold of tho site on which the school was situated, but found that special legislation would bo necessary which could not he passed before the October session. There was also an application for extensions at South Brighton. It was unlikely that much could he done for either North Brighton or South Brighton Schools until the roll number at the main .school at New Brighton reached 600. He could hold out no hope that the board would build on a site held on an insecure tenure. The board then went into committee, and on resuming adjourned.
