THE CENTRAL POWERS
ALEXIEFFS VIEWSAUSTRIANS SCATTERED AND BROKEN. AmtnHra «d N.Z. C*bl* Association. (Received' September 11, 11 »- m > NEW YORK, September 10. General Alesieff, interviewed a* Pewograd, said that if the Central Powers start a great western offensive Germany must provide the driving power. The Turks can send only 40,000 men. He would hesitate to say that such an offensive is impossible, but he {s confident that the Allies could beat it He would not say that the Austrian armies have been crushed, but they have been badly demoralised 1 . The German* had filled the gaps with twenty divisions, thus stiffening the Austrian*, who are still badly disorganised. Russia's early defeats were due solely to lack of ammunition, but th» position was different now. The Austrians are so shattered by the drive, which still continues, that they will require 400,000 Germans to cement them together. Asked about peace, General Alesieif said that probably it would come, but it was a distance off. Neither side had attained its object, and there can be no thought of peace now, and the war must follow its inevitable historic course.
