MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE Tho General Committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association met this afternoon; present— Messrs C. H. Ensor (chairman)/ H. P. Little, 11. W. Lochhead, K. M'liitosh, W. W. M'Rae, U. SetliSmith, W. G. Smith, W. D, Stewart and Hi E. B. Watson. Mr L, 'H. Campbell, of Happy Valley, C. W. Harvey, of Christcliurch. wore elected members of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
Tho ■ chairman welcomed the new members of the committee, who ' were making their first appearance. A. letter was read from Mr W. G. M'lntosh. in regard to the examination of horses competing at the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, suggesting that the animals should bo examined by a veterinary surgeon before being judged. It was decided to refer the matter to the Horse Committer
The following recommendations of the annual general meeting were considered:—That a small committee should be appointed to further discuss the question of veterinary examination at shojvs and the proposed Stallion Bill which will shortly be before the conference. such committee to 'he asked to procure the advice of practicing qualified veterinary surceons in the country and to report to the General Committee; that the committee should again consider the question of the appointment of paid examiners of sheep for unfair trimming before finally acting in the matter'; that the grouping of breeds at the ram fair should be revised so as to equalise the two sections. It was decided to appoint the Horse Committees on the question of the veterinary examination and to refer the others to the Sheep Committee. The chairman referred to suggested improvements to the Agricultural and Pastoral Asociation grounds. He said that with a few alterations the ground could be made otic of the very best in Australasia. The association was a wealthy one. and it could well afford to make improvements. He moved that tho Grounds Committee should make an inspection of tho show grounds and make, a report. This was seconded by Mr Hay ward and carried. A letter was read from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce having reference to the Otira tunnel, suggesting that the Agricultural and Pastoral Association should give tho chamber all assistance possible in the carrying on of the work of completing the tunnel. After brief discussion, it was agreed to supj)ort the Chamber of Commerce, in the matter. The Director of the Technical College wrote in regard to the financial assistance which the Agricultural and Pastoral Association had given in the past, and trusting that the grant would be subscribed this year. The chaiiinan proposed that the usual contribution, namely, £2O, should bo made. This was seconded by Mr W. Hay ward, ,iun., and carried, reierence being made to the good work of the College. Accounts amounting to £l*ll lls 4d were passed for payment.
