AFTER MANY YEARS.

GAS COMPANY AND CITY COUNCIL THE LIGHTING CONTRACT. The Mayor has received a letter from Mr R. C'. Bishop, general manager of the Christchurcn Gas Company, acknowledging the City Council's appreciation of the way in which the company has carried out its contract for street lighting during many years, with an entire absence of friction between the two bodies.

Mr Bishop, on behalf of the hoard of directors of the Gas Company, thanks the council for its expression of satisfaction at the good relations between the council and the company, for more than fifty Years, and adds:

"It is rather interesting to trace the development of the street lighting for .all these years. The lighting commenced in 186*5 with only a few Tamps. In 1867-1870 there were about one hundred lamps, the contract price being:

/' In 1893 we presented the council with the lamp-posts and lanterns that arc fixed opposite the Cathedral, at a cost of £137, and these were supplied with high-power burners and only charged fit tire rate of one ordinary lamp. Wo had also fixed free of cost iive other-high-power lamps, each of an illuminating power of 700 ca.ndles. and these also were included as ordinary lamps. Tn 1898, we presented the council with the lamps that lit the Clock Tower and supplied the gas and maintained them free of cost from that time. Since 1900 we have renewed the lanterns throughout the city with the best pattern of what is known as the celebrated Liverpool lantern, at a cost to us of £3360 Us—again without charge to the city. £: ln taking leave of the council as their public lighting contractors, it is pleasant to record how friendly all our relations have been. "We hav'c had to meet during that time many Mayors, councillors, town clerks and city'surveyors, and have remained on excellent terms with them all."
