BATTLE WITH POLICE.
DESPERATE BURGLARS. a sensational"encounter. INTRUDERS KILL CONSTABLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright. MELBOURNE, October 1. A sensational encounter between the police .arid three burglars occurred in the Trades Hail, resulting in Constable M'Grath being shot dead and two of the intruders, John Jackson and Richard Buckley, being wounded. A constable on duty near the Trades Hall had his suspicions aroused by hearing a slight sound of sawing. Ho sent for Assistance and a posse of police .surrounded the building. On entering the hall the police were met with a volley of revolver shots, to which they replied. When the lights were turned on two men were seen running along a corridor. Constale M'Grath hurried along the passage, where he subsequently was found in a dying condition. Two of the burglars then rushed for tho door amid a rapid exchange of shots with tho police. Jackson was wounded in the thigh and had one of his ankles broken. He was secured in the building. Buckley was seriously wounded in the neck and collapsed after reaching the yard. In the meantime the third burglar, named Ward, was caught while attempting to escape through a window.
