Unskilled Labour.—A fairly largo number of applications for employment has been made during the month, but orders to send batches of men for labouring work in connection with tho military camps at Trentham and Featherst-on alleviated ihe position so far as men who' were able to leave tho city were c-onrarned. During the ! month forty single and seventy-two ' married men, with 267 dependants, I were assisted to ■employment--twenty- j , eno to private and ninety-seven to l Government works. Tho report on the women's branch is as follows : The following applications were received from employers during the month: Domestics 33, to assist -1, cooks and cook-generals 'lB, house and housopnrlour maids 18, waitress 1, ladyhelps 4, mirsegirls 2. housekeepers *2, married couples 'J, sea-msiress 1, charwomen 10; total 03. l''or the same period from employees were:--Domestics 7, cooks and cookgenerals 12, house and house-parlour maids (>, housekeepers 3. waitress 1, lady-help 1, charwomen 0; total 39. Twenty-six or ilie.se were found suitable etupioyir.cnf, four of whom wero married ai\d twenty-two single or widows. Two came from tho North Island, twenty- two from the South Island. and two from Great Britain. Of the ununited applicants se-vera-1 are elderly, lor whom it is diftlciilfc to get positions ; others are seeking work, in tea rooms or restaurants, and for such there is Little demand at present. Good positions are still offering in the country. but few girls are willing to leave the city.
