EDUCATION BOARD.

TO-DAY'S KEITING. The North Canterbury Education Board met to-day; present—Messrs G. iiennie (chairman), T. W. Adams, J. Jamieson, M. Daiziel, W. A. Banks, H, Boyd, E. H. x'ndiews, W. H. Collins and O. H. Opie. The Buildings Committee reported that it had replied to the German Bay request for a teacher's residence that a new scaool was to be erected on a central site, and the question of a schoolhouse would be considered later. Ihe Mount Soiners committee had been informed that the floor space already exceeded the area required by the Department. A letter was receivod from the Health Department stating that there had been considerable overcrowding in the New Brighton School. The Chief Inspector and the architect were requested to report on the matter and as to tho necessity of applying for further additions. The question of establishing a school in North New Brighton was held over until after the holidays.

The report was adopted. The following tenders for painting and repairs were accepted:—Heathcote Valley, C. Duggan and' Son, £49 17s tid : Clarkville, Plackett Bros., £39 6s; Mead, G. A. Mazev, £ll 15s; Pendarves, G A. Mazev, £lB 10s; Waikari, J. Shaw, £27 1.55; Sprinsfield, G. A. Mazey, £29 13s (xl; Wad'dincton, G. A. Mazev, £4l 14s- Russell's Flat. B. P. Manhire and Son. £24 30s; Halkett, G. A. Mazey, £4O 9s; Gebbie's Valley, G A. Mazey, £2O os; Prebbleton, C. Duggan and Son, £53 13s 6d. Tho Appointments Committee reported that Miss h. K. Saunders, Kaiapoi Island, had been granted leave of absence owing to illness until the end of the school year. It had been agreed that pupil teacher and probationer candidates should be personally interviewed by the inspectors, who would then make recommendations for appointment. An application from Miss A. M. Saunders, pupil teacher in the Addington School, to be allowed to remain _ another year, was referred to the Chief Inspector. An application from Miss F. E~. Taylor, pupil teacher in the Christehurrh West School, to be transferred to the Rockenha.m School for a year, was also referred to the Chief Inspector. Applications from the head mistress of 0 the Phillip'itown School and from the Richmond and St Albans Committees for the substitution of an assistant mistress in place of two pupil teachers were referred to the Chief Inspector. An application from tbe_ Principal of the Christchurcli Boys' High School for the extension bv one vear of the Board scholarships held bv Ft. W. James. A. F. M'Arthur, *. A. M'Lnchlan and N. T. Sinclair, was hold over pending a reply from the Department as to whether funds would bo available for Board scholarships next year. The following appointments wore recommended :—Bnrwood, Miss F. E. Kent infant mistress; Lytrclton, Miss E, E. Ranki'\ assistant mistress. The report was adopted.
