ONION SECRETARY AND MINISTER-
On Saturday Mr E. Howard, secretary of the Canterbury General Labou'ers' Union, teleyaphed to the Hon AY. Hemes, Minister of Labour, statin;?; that men were being asked to work on ballas trucks for i's a day, while Hie Arbitration (.Vmrt's award has fixed the wages of general labourers at 9s 4.d. M "Howard added to bis message: — " Are you in favour of Government sweating?" To-day ho received a reply from Mr Homes, stating that the matter Jiad been referred to the Department for a rcpart. Mr Howard has sent another telegram to the Minister as follows :—" My question was, do you approve of swoat'ing labour? The Department here is taking advantage of the unemployed trouble, and is engaging men at less than award rates."
