CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW.
OPENED AT LYTTELTON METHODIST CHURCH. The annual chrysanthemum show and horticultural and industrial exhibition in conjunction with the Lyttelton Methodist Church was opened in the Oddfollows' Hall, Lyttelton, yesterday afternoon, a large number of people being present. The Rev B. F. Rothwell was in charge of the proceedings, and in calling upon tho Mayor, Mr J. R. Webb, to open the show congratulated him, on behalf ot the church, on his election as chief magistrate of the port. Mr Webb in an appropriate speech referred to the elevating and refining influence of horticulture, and after thanking those present for their expressions of goodwill, declared the show open Ncirfthstanding the . unfavourable weather that growers have had to contend with, the collection of blooms was, good, especially., those exhibited l*r-«te» W. Bayliss, of Christchurch. *"" Gower, a local enthusiast, also .-.. a very line selection, and Mr D. Comer exhibited a, well-selected bunch of blooms. Messrs W. Foster and J. S Olliver had a line collection of vegetables, the former gaining first place. Mr Elakeway also exhibited a fine lot of pears. «
The show will close to-night, and a company of bluejackets from H.M.S. New Zealand will provide a number of musical items.
