RECOUNT ASKED FOR.
ELECTIOX OF MEMBERS FOR THE LINWOOD WARD. Yesterday there was filed in the Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, a petition signed by ten electors of the Linwood ward of the city of Christchurch, praying for an inquiry into the recent election of three councillors for the Linwood ward, and for the determination by the Court whether Messrs M'Combs, Scott and Loasby were or were not duly elected. The' petition asks for a recount in order to check the returns made by the various deputy-returning officers, in view, apparently, of the small of 16 votes which separated, Mr Loasby, the third of the elected candidates, from Mr Sullivan, the fourth_ on the list. The petitioners base their claim to an inquiry upon the grounds that mistakes were alleged to be made by the deputy-returning officers in adding the results in making up their returns, and particular instances are alleged in reference to the deputy-returning officers at the Mile Road and Linwood Avenue booths.
The petitioners make no reflection. it is understood, upon the conduct of the election, and none upon the work of tho returning officer, but base their claim to a recount of the votes upon arithmetical errors alleged to have boon made by two of the seven deputies.
