BROACHING CARGO.
AN EXTRAORDINARY STATEMENT. > * [Pee Press Association.^ AUCKLAND, May 14.
Joseph Brookes, a eeamart, charged with the theft of drapery from tho steamer Navua, made a startling statement at the Police Court this morning. It appeared that Brookes was in charge of the hold when a case of goods was damaged. Several watersiders tore offi some* of the damaged boards and extracted a cardboard box containing slip-bodicea. The box was taken and Brookes acoepted some of the bodices without saying.anything of the matter. Brookes was the. only man to whom the bodices could be traced. Asked if he had (anything to say, Brookes said that it was high time that the Union Company placed officers in charge of holds, instead of seamen. If a man told an officer about pillaging, the men in the hold would fix,up tho case and deny everything. There were 1500 men on the wharf at Auckland, and if he got any of them fined or into trouble by reporting them he would have to leave Auckland and keep away. The trate imposed a sentence of one month's hard labour.
