PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE.

REPLY TO CRITICISSI. [Per Press Association-.] AUCKLAND, Slay 13. The Hon A. L. Herdiuan, replying to criticism of the appointment of an inspector to the Public Trust Office, said that the Public Trustee's original intention was to appoint an officer to be inspector for the examining, of properties and seeing that tho provision in the leases was properly complied with. Tho Public Trustee considered a salary of £3OO a year ample for this office, and made recommendation accordingly. However, it appeared to Sir Herdman's judgment that an inspector of wider powers should be appointed, and consequently the Public Trustee's recommendation was not acted upon. When the matter came up finally for consideration the Public Trustee could not be consulted, owing to a serious breakdown in health. Sir Herdmau ridiculed the suggestion that political influence was responsible for Sir Barnett's appointment.
