BUSINESS METHODS.

'no holiday for workshops MEN. HEQUEST FOR EQUAL TREAT- • MENT WITH OTHER CIVIL SERVANTS. MINISTER OF RAILWAYS REFU§E§. Although other branches of the Civil Bervioe in a;, to have a holiday on Thursday in honour of the visit of the New Zealand, the men at the Addington Workshops are not to be allowed a day off . They have been busily engaged in getting ready the rolling stock to oirry the abnormal traffic caused by the warship's visit, but they are not t > be given any respite. 1 Considerable feelijig has been arousamong the men by the refusal of the Hon W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, to extend, to the workshops the holiday granted to other branches of the services. The men state that they would not have asked for a holiday if other departments had not been allowed a day off, and the fact that the Mi Bister of Railways has refused their request has occasioned a great deal of disappointment. It is urged by the ilien that the Railway Department is always penalised in the matter of holidays because it has to show a profit »nd they regard the " business methods" as the cause for the refusal to'their request. They argue that the closing of the workshops for one Jay could not affect the service in tiny -way and would only be fair treatment.
