H'.M.S. NEW ZEALAND SPORTS MEETING. EXHIBITION' TROT. The proposn] to hold a. sports meeting in Christchurch, to celebrate the visit of H.M.S. Now Zealand to Canterbury, lias been taken up very heartily l>y tho citizens, and the prmnininie is being framed to provide as varied and interestinEr nn entertainment aa possible. The, sports will be held on the, New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's grounds at Addington on Thursday, May 15. Among- the items arranged for is an cxhibit.ion trottinjf handicap, and tho race is attracting- quite a. lot oi attention in sporting' circles. It will be decided ';ver a milo and a half, and will be confined to horses that can do ;i.30 or better. This is the fastest class mile and a half race ever run in New Zealand, so that visitors to the sports meeting' should bo afforded an excellent opportunity of witnessing a brilliant exhibition of trotting. Entries for the race closed at noon to-day, the list of competitors engaged being as follows:—Lord Hoathcoio, Bright. Bellis, Emmeline. Adonis, Little Tib. Lord Dillon, Ginnell-a, Abcn>ldy, Delia., Jenny Lind and Bell Metal. These fwelvo'horses may fairly be regarded as thoroughly representative, of the light harness horses of Canterbury, so that owners of trotting horses have come forward very heartily to assist in entertaining the visitors from the man-o'-v.-ar. It has been arranged to present solid silver cups to the owners of the three placed horses. Each cup will contain nn engraving depicting H.M.S. New Zealand, as well as a suitable inscription. In addition, a gold medal will be presented to the driver of each horse, taking part in tho race, similarly inscribed io the cups. The funds for these prizes have been donated by the Metropolitan, Canterbury Parle and New Brighton Trotting Clubs." It lias been arranged l that no offioial time will ho taken for the race, in order that no competitor shall be prejudiced for future racing, but the enthusiasm that is being shown by'those concerned augurs well for an exciting contest.
