SCOTT ACCEPTS.

THE ALLEN" DOONE CHALLENGE. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln reply to Mr Allen Doone's challenge we shall be pleased to accept Mr Doone's offer of a race to be held on the Hutt Road, during the period mentioned, viz., between June 1(J and June 22. We are, however, of the opinion—-which opinion has been verified by the municipal authorities of this city—that under no conditions would the councils governing the Hutt Road allow the use of this road for racing purposes, and even if they did, the police, who are at present trapping on this road, would at once take steps to prevent the race. We also understand that hurdles have been placed on this road to regulate the speed of cars. We have, however, applied to the Wellington authorities for the necessary permission to hold the race, and il : it is granted, we shall at once place our cheque for £IOO into the hands of -ho " Lyttelton Times" Company, •vliich at present holds Mr Doone's cheque for a similar amount.

In conclusion wo would express our regret that Mr Doone is unable to race us on the Brighton beach, which is the only safe place for a speed race and where very high speeds can be attained without- danger to the public or tho drivers of the cars.--We are. etc., W. B. SCOTT AND CO.
