In May last a house was destroyed by fire, and tho occupier, James Phillipson, recovered the insurance on goods returned as burnt: ' Recently it was discovered that some of the property had nob been destroyed, and Pliiliip3on was charged ivith theft of: a violin, and with obtaining, from the New Zealand Insurance Company by fraud. He was, sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and the Magistrate remarked that it was a most, serious matter and that probably this'class of offence was rather common, though difficult to detect.
