SHODDY BOOTS.

PROTECTIVE BILL TO BE INTRODUCED. [Per Pekss Association.] WELLINGTON, August 13. . Mr W. Murray, of Auckland, waited on the Minister of Customs to-day as a deputation from what may be described as the largest section of boot manufacturers in Auckland. He said "that be represented the manufacturers pure and simple, not the manufacturing importer, and asked for increased duty. He suggested that the Minister should call a conference during the recess of representatives of both classes of manufacturers and retailers. The Minister promised to meet, before Christmas, three representatives of the manufacturers, three of the importing agents ,and three of employees. He added that this session ho would introduce a Bill to compel all importations containing shoddy to be accompanied by a certificate to that effect. ,The Government was determined that the people should not be hoodwinked any longer by purchasing brown paper boots with paper on the outside.
