Fifteen thousand persons are homeless- Ample food, medicines and tents have been sent. The majority are Greeks. Fires originated by 1 the overturning of lamps before ikons. A thousand persons have been admitted to hospitals in Constantinople. Returns are still incomplete. Many villages are smoking ruins. ■ It is now stated that sixty were killed at Mvriophiton, one hundred and fifty at Horaganoa, and twenty at Udjomakereh. Sixty were killed and one hundred and fifty injured at Sliarkeny. Thermal springs at Dedesgatch have dried up. Fissures opened at Luleberg for fifteen hundred yards emitting eand, hot water and sulphurous vapours.
The great earthquake which occurred on Friday in Turkey was recorded by the seismograph of the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. The first movement occurred here at lhr 52nrin 3sec Greenwich mean civil time on August 9, and was followed by gradually increasing tremors. Large waves commenced to arrive at 2hr 43min 7sec Greenwich time, attaining a maximum ftt Shr llmin lsec Greenwich time, the complete amplitude of boom 'motion being then three millimetres. Thereafter successive maxima extended to Shr 49mm 7sec. The motion then gradually died away, but did not cease entirely until shr 20min Greenwich time. New Zealand civil time is llhr BOmin ahead of Greenwich civil time.
