DIOCESAN STANDING COMMITTEE.

The Standing Committee met on August 6. A report by the subcommittee for religious education was read, presenting recommendations made by a sub-committee of the Diocesan Sunday School Teachers' Association, and resolutions founded upon them for the consideration of the Standing Committee. It was resolved that a copy of the report containing the recommendations referred to should be sent to each member of the Standing Committee. The sub-committee on building plans and loans reported on a plan for an addition at tlie eastern end of the Mission Hall, Shirley, and the recommendation was adopted. The vicar and wardens of Ivaiapoi and Woodend wrote asking the consent of the Standing Committee and of tho Church. Property Trustees to the sale of the Woodend vicarage property. It -was decided to ask the trustees to obtain a valuation of the property, power being given them in respect'of the sale. The Archdeacon of Christchurch reported on a proposal of the Oxford County Council to purchase a strip of the frontage of Rs. 131 for road widening. The report was referred to the Church Property Trustees with power to act. A petition for the reconstitution of Kaiapoi, Woodend and Clarkville as a parish was ordered to be brought before the next session of the Diocesan Synod. Inquiry was directed to be made as to the present letting of the Woodend Glebe. A letter from Canon Pascoe on tlie subject of the organising secretaryship of the Church Mission Fund was referred to a ; sp?cial sub-committee for consideration and report. A letter from the vicar of Lincoln in reference to the Greenpark Church was received, inquiry to be made as to the result of a meeting of the respective Church wardens on the matter. Canon Sedgwick wrote asking that a public meeting might bo held in the evening of the day fixed "for the opening of the Diocesan Synod (October 8) in the interests of the Maori Girls' School at Ohoka. It was agreed to recommend the Synod to adopt a motion to be made by Canon Sedgwick for an adjournment for this" purpose." " Archdeacon Jacob forwarded a proposal for the erection of Beaconsfield, Kingsdown, Pareora East, and Claremont into a parochial district, and an alteration of the boundary of the parish of Timaru for this purpose. Direction was given that notice of the proposed alteration should be sent to tho cures affected by it. Application for the usual capital grant of £2 >i) for the purchase of a vicarage and land at Tinwald, opposite the Church there, was referred to the Archdeacon of Akaroa for report, and power to act on a favourable report was given to the Church Property Trustees. Permission was given for tho removal of the schooli room, St. Michael's, Christchurch, to I the southern side of the school reserve, j with a view to the erection on its present site of a. new schoolroom in substantial materials. Written applicai tion to the diocese of Wai'apu for the services of a Maori priest, to reside and work in the Chatham Islands, was directed to be made on behalf of the Standing Committee. Notices of motion for the next meeting were given:—(l) By Aichdeacon Ensor, "That the Standing Committee promote a Bill at the next session of Synod to alter financial regulation No. 67 so as to bring churches under the regulation as well as vicarages"; (2) By Rev. J. Mackenzie Gibson, ' That the Standing Committee recommend the Synod to allot a stipend from the revenue of the bishopric estate, if funds are available, for a relieving priest for the diocese, whose primary duty shall be to assist over-worked and rest-needing clergy.' 3
