DEAR BEER.
COUNTERFEIT COINS. A SALUTARY SENTENCE. The keen eye of a barman in a local hotel on Saturday night was responsible for the appearance in the Magistrate's Court this morning of Thomas Higgins, alias Andrew Keown, alias M'Curo, a young man, who pleaded guilty to a charge of having on Saturday attempted to obtain 10a from Hector Gatherer by means of a counterfeit half-sovereign. Chief-Detective Bishop said that accused went into a hotel and ordered 2s worth of beer, tendering as payment a counterfeit coin, which was detected by tho barman. The coin was an advertising medallion, issued by a Sydney firm. The medallion bore on one sido a head and tho superscription, "Marcus Clarke, 1890'.' and on tho obverse side was an advertisement for a drapery firm in Newton, New South Wales. It was similar to gold in appearance, and in a crowded place might easily pass for a coin. The accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. A further" charge that he was an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient means of support, was withdrawn by leave of the Court.
