LAWN TENNIS.
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tho overnight rain had made the courts very soft, and tho overhead conditions wero gloomy when play was resumed in the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championships this morning. There were several very interesting matches during the morning. In the Men's Singles Ollivier beat Kidston by three sets to one. Kidston pla.yed strongly in the earlier games, but did not last as long as his younger rival, and was outstayed rather than outplayed. O'Haru Wood beat Fisher, also in tho third round, with an unexpected margin. Tho heavy court doubtless troubled Fisher, but excuses cannot alter tho fact that ho was fairly and squarely beaten on his merits this morning by a young player who has a gTeat future before lum. Peacock always had a little tho better of Quill. In the Ladies' Singles tho holder of the championship was substantially beaten by Miss Stewart. It was first-class tennis on both sides, hard, true driving on both hands and sound, attrnctive work, particularly off the ground, characterising the two sets. Miss Stewart owed her win to the little extra accuracy and certainty which enabled her to get tho winning shots. Moreover, she showed courage and enterprise, coming into the net and volleying neatly, in this way taking several aces. Miss Hartgill won easily from Miss Scott, playing as consistently as ever. In the afternoon, however, she had a harder task when she met Miss Gray, whoso surenens was more than a match for the •younger player's power and activity. Following aro tho results: MEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP.
